The Tamang people, primarily residing in their traditional territory of Tamsaling in Nepal, are an integral part of the central and eastern Himalayan region. Their population is estimated to be around 3 to 4 million, with a significant presence in Nepal and spread across northeastern India, including Darjeeling, Sikkim, and parts of Assam, as well as reaching as far as Myanmar. According to Census 2021, there are 1,639,866 Tamang people in Nepal, or around 6% of the entire population.
The Tamang community has historically faced challenges such as social and economic marginalization, limited access to education, and political neglect. Despite these adversities, the Tamang people have maintained their rich cultural heritage, language, and traditions, contributing significantly to the diverse social fabric of the Himalayan region.
